The Scene:

Patient pinned beneath 300 ton crane. Both lower extremities crushed under collapsed cab, patient in prone position.



The Patient:

48 Year old male, pinned under 300 ton crane. AAOx3, GCS 15, minimal bleeding.



Surgical Extraction Team:

Response & Deployment of Resources


FAST Teams:

Scene Stabilization-

  • Cut away parts of the cab to improve access to patient

  • Requested additional crane be brought in to lift toppled crane

  • Requested multiple fire departments for additional cribbing and extrication materials

  • Tried numerous methods to lift weight

Fire Department: used cribbing to stabilize crane and flat bed, padding was placed around patient.

Paramedic Unit: Established IV NS & TKO. Initial dosage of pain medication given, provided supportive care & cooling packs to patient.

Flight Crew: Air evacuation arrived on scene, administered to patient, continued dosage of pain medications, assisted surgeon.

Surgeon: on scene, prepped & preformed onsite amputation. Patient Extricated and prepped for transport to OU medical center.




Patient Follow up:

Patient was formalized and extubated the same day.
